An Arizona bicyclist was killed Sunday when he was struck by a car on U.S. 73.
Brown County Sheriff John Merchant said Earl Johnston, 51, of Surprise, was southbound on his bicycle when he was hit by a northbound car driven by ElDeana Pearson, 23, of Falls City, Neb.
The accident was reported around 8:40 a.m. at mile-marker 105, just south of the Kansas-Nebraska border.
Johnston was pronounced dead at the scene.
Merchant said he knew of no injuries to the driver, or the other passenger in the car.
The accident remains under investigation. Merchant said deputies are checking into the story the driver swerved to miss a deer and struck the bicyclist. But they don't know if this is true or not, he said.
Johnston was part of a bicycle tour traveling through the area, but had separated from the group at some point, Merchant said.
The highway was closed for a time while emergency personnel worked the accident scene, he said.

When I got the news Sunday morning at church that Earl had been killed, it shook me to the depths of my soul. He was such a kind and gentle person. We had shared a ride in my truck on a recent hiking trip and had a chance to really talk. What a great man he was. Words cannot express how much I will miss him. It was a priviledge and honor to know him.

This was stunning news for those of us in Surprise, Arizona, that know Earl. You have never met a kinder, gentler, easy going man in your life. He was a great son of our Lord and served faithfully in our church here in Surprise. He will be dearly missed and we grieve his departure from this earth. We are confident though, that he is in Glory, continuing to worship and serve our Lord.
