Peyton Newell, Hiawatha eighth-grader, was selected as a 2010 Football University Youth All American.
Hiawatha Eighth-Grader Named Football University Youth All-American

By Joey May

A Hiawatha eighth-grader was chosen as a 2010 Football University Youth All American.

Peyton Newell, 13-year-old son of Frank and Stacie Newell and the late Missy Malter Newell, was selected from more than 4,000 nominees as one of the 44 eighth-graders from 35 states to play in the second annual Football University 8th Grade All-American Bowl in January.

Newell will be recognized at half-time of the Hiawatha-Atchison football game, Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Hiawatha High School stadium.

The youth All-American Bowl game will be Sunday, Jan. 10 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, and will be broadcast live on the web.

The Football University All-American Bowl honors the top seventh and eighth graders in the nation, bringing them together to play in an All-Star format on a national stage. It is modeled after the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, which will also be held in San Antonio that same week for high school seniors.

Newell has also been invited to participate in the Youth All-American Bowl Week activities, which will showcase the top 44 seventh-graders and the top 44 eighth-graders in the nation. The week will consist of the 2010 U.S. Army National Combine, practices, a skills competition and break-out sessions with Hall of Famers, current and former NFL stars and celebrities.

The Youth All-Americans will have VIP access to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and will be honored during that game on Saturday, Jan. 9.

Newell, who is only the second athlete from Kansas to receive this honor, was one of more than 300 youth all-stars nominated for this elite honor. The selection team, which consists of scouts and youth coaches from around the country, narrowed down the field and interviewed all finaists.

In addition to the All-American honor, Newell was selected to be part of Football University, an elite training camp held later that spring in 32 locations around the nation. Football University is an invitation-only, one-of-a-kind football experience focusing on developing and enhancing the technique and skill of elite-level players. It is modeled after NFL mini-camps.
