The Horton City Commission met for the final time in September, and the group voted to skip out on a planned 2 percent increase to city’s sewer rate. The planned October rate increase was deferred due to recommendations to hold off until KRWA performs a water rate analysis.

The Hiawatha City Commission met on Monday evening, and heard from property owner Matthew Curless, after he was denied an agricultural zoning change by the Board of Zoning Appeals.

The Horton City Commission met earlier this month, and one topic of discussion was local free food programs. Commissioner Wade Edwards voiced his concerns about the programs potentially shutting down the local grocery store.

On Oct. 19, 2020, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) granted review in the case “Lange v. California” for a total of one hour of oral argument during its October Term for 2020-2021. The case originated from the California First District Court of Appeal. “Lange v. California” has not yet been scheduled for argument.

A vehicle said by authorities to have been traveling at a high rate of speed on a side road off U.S. Highway 36 crashed into a ditch on early Sunday morning, killing one of the five teenage occupants, all of whom are from Hiawatha.

The Board of Brown County Commissioners met in regular session with the following members present: Chairman Dwight Kruse, Keith Olsen, and Richard L. Lehmkuhl. Also present was Brown County Clerk, Melissa Gormley. County Attorney, Kevin Hill, was present for a portion of the meeting.
