The week of March 6-10 was Anti-Bullying Week at Hiawatha High School. This week is celebrated annually by Hiawatha students and staff to promote action against all kinds of bullying and to raise awareness of bullying in and out of school.
To show support for Anti-Bullying Week, Hiawatha High School students were encouraged to dress up for spirit days. Monday was hats off to good choices (everyone wears hats). Tuesday was we’re all on the same team (sports attire), Wednesday was we’re all WACKY (mismatch), and Thursday was Class Colors (Seniors — black, Juniors — pink, Sophomores — white, Freshman — purple).
The first Anti-Bullying Week took place in 2004 from Nov. 22-26 and it has a new theme each year. It is important for communities to raise awareness of bullying amongst children and young adults. Communities must be aware of the dangers of bullying and how it can damage the mental health of any child. Anti-Bullying Week helps schools tackle bullying both in person and online. If you notice someone being bullied, please do not stand by and watch or allow it to continue. Stand up for your peers, even if it may not be someone you like.
