For the second year in a row, the Hiawatha Lady Red Hawk volleyball team have flexed their muscles on their home court, winning the Hiawatha Invitational in back to back seasons after capturing the tournament championship on Saturday afternoon.

Friday night did not turn out the way the Hiawatha Red Hawks had envisioned, as they fell behind early against the visiting Riverside Cyclones and could never get their offense on track as the game got away by a score of 42-0.

The Horton Charger volleyball squad traveled to Rock Creek on Saturday for a tournament against several other local schools. Unfortunately, the team could not get on track for the day, and found themselves bounced without a win.

Friday night may not have been a great moment in Horton Charger football history, as the team fell 46-6 at Saint Mary’s, but the team certainly took strides forward from their first outing of the season, and Coach David Losey sees progress as the team looks for a different outcome in the win…

You will likely know the result of the Kansas City Chiefs’ seasoning opening game against the Houston Texans on Thursday night. With that in mind, I’m going to give a few of my thoughts on the season, as a whole, and what to look for as the team kicks off their attempt at a repeat world title.

So Wednesday was…a day…right? I mean, you’ve got hurricanes, politics, sports, and then almost no sports.

We are less than three weeks away from the Kansas Chiefs’ season-opening contest with the Houston Texans, and as training camp marches on, media, players and coaches have been sharing their opinions on how the team is progressing heading into the first game. Here are a few things to follow o…

The Governor of Kansas has announced a lift of the stay at home order, and has outlined a phased process of re-opening the state to recreational activities. And Kansas is not alone, the nation as a whole has begun the process of moving closer to having sports back on the field. Here is my gu…

Things were slow in the early going of the draft, but it seemed like everything changed on Thursday night with the Packers selection of quarterback Jordan Love in the first rounds. From there, things got a little bit weird the rest of the way, and the Kansas City Chiefs’ selections throughou…

Landmark moments can become a regular thing for a big time athlete from a small town. Former Horton Charger Trey Dishon set the standard for the rural high school when he received a late scholarship offer from Kansas State during his senior year, then just over a year later he became the fir…

I don’t have a typical column for you this week — I’ve been too caught up in the draft, I suppose — so instead I’m bringing you my thoughts on a few highlights from around the world of sports for the week. Leading off, after writing the last two weeks about some of the seniors who are missin…

By the time you read this, we will be less than a week away from the first round of the NFL Draft. In our current sports-vacuum of a world, I expect viewership to hit all-time numbers, and possibly to even rival the Super Bowl. To put it plainly, sports fans everywhere need this and if it go…

We talked last week about the void that sports has left behind, and as stay-at-home orders in the state have started to settle in and we are seeing the bigger picture of what our daily lives are going to look like for the next month or two, I think it’s time to start figuring out some coping…

What a remarkable game. Kansas City’s monumental comeback and eventual blowout win were the stuff legends are built on, as the team became the first to trail by 24 points and then lead by halftime, as well as the first ever to trail by 20 or more and then win by 20, and also set a new record…

Saturday marks the opening round of the playoffs for teams that earned a bye, with the Kansas City Chiefs opening their tournament action against the Houston Texans on Sunday afternoon. On its face, the game looks like a solid matchup for KC, though any fans who are looking ahead to a likely…

A bye week is quite a Christmas present, and that is just what the Chiefs received courtesy of the Miami Dolphins last weekend, as the Fins knocked off the Patriots in Foxboro to push Kansas City into the AFC’s 2-seed. Don’t get me wrong, the Chiefs have done their part, but Sunday’s upset i…

There is one week to go before the playoffs, Chiefs fans, and this team is playing good, all-around football, is as healthy as it’s been since week one, and is flying completely under the radar heading into the big tourney. Of course a bye would be preferable, but outside of that I think the…

The final two weeks of the regular season are upon us, and the Kansas City Chiefs are rounding into form. While the offense is still lagging compared to what we came to expect after last season’s dominance, the team as a whole has played three of its best games of the season over the past se…

Two local schools earned 2019 State football titles last weekend, as Nemaha Central and Centralia cashed in on championship Saturday.

That was an interesting week of football. There were some definite plusses and minuses for the Kansas City Chiefs, so let’s take a look at those while keeping an eye on the upcoming contest with the New England Patriots and the overall playoff picture.

Bye week is upon us, and I don’t know if it could have come quick enough. Not only does the break give fans a chance to catch their breath (and maybe get some Christmas lights hung), but the late bye gives the Chiefs finally have a chance to get fully healthy as they prepare themselves for t…

That was a big win, folks. There were a few reasons to believe that the Chiefs could overcome the visiting Vikings, but more signs pointed to a hot Vikings team stealing a win in Arrowhead. Picking up a win against another division leader is big at any time, but without your starting quarter…

Eight weeks have gone by and the Kansas City Chiefs, in the midst of the “meat” of their loaded schedule, are perhaps the league’s shakiest 5-3 team. You could also call them the most dangerous 5-3 team in the league. It’s hard to remember a season that has seemed as out of sorts and askew o…

There’s a lot to unpack from the last week, as the extended time of a Thursday game bleeds into a long week of preparation and uncertainty surrounding the status of star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Much like I discussed in my article a week ago, an ailing Mahomes, favoring one leg due to an…

Well I definitely read the last couple of weeks wrong. After the first three weeks of the season, I think most Chiefs fans were getting comfortable with the notion of an invincible football team. Sure, there were some injury concerns, but we can do without Tyreek Hill for a few weeks if Dema…

Well I read that one wrong. In claiming that last weekend’s game against the Detroit Lions would be a walkover, I underestimated both the Lions’ ceiling and the Chiefs’ floor. In readjusting my views on the season, it is good to see that on their worst day (that we have seen with Patrick Mah…

Another week, another win in the books for the Kansas City Chiefs, as they continue their Super Bowl-or-bust season. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes continues his vicious assault on the NFL record books, racking up yardage and touchdowns at a mesmerizing pace and without regard for who surrounds…

The season opener is in the books for the Kansas City Chiefs, and what a start it was to the 2019 season. The Chiefs traveled to Jacksonville to take on one of the best defenses in the league and hung 40 points on the Jaguars to come away with a 14-point win.

It’s come to the point in the preseason where we realize that much of what we had known is still the reality of what we know today, so it should come as no surprise that the biggest takeaway from the week comes from hundreds of miles away and a day after the game. Hosting San Francisco on Sa…

Two games down, two to go as the Kansas City Chiefs work through their preseason schedule. If you were a little bored with Saturday’s matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, I think the team’s starting offense was right there with you. Patrick Mahomes and the entire crew looked out of sync and…

If there was anything to be gathered from last Saturday’s beat down of the lowly Cincinnati Bengals in the Chiefs’ preseason opener, it may have been a reminder that defenses just cannot cover everyone. Last season proved that point, and this weekend’s contest showed that the offense is goin…
