A Hiawatha man was killed in a fatal car crash on Sunday evening at 10:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 36, according to a report by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
The report stated that a 2013 Kia Sorento driven by 76-year old Richard Childress of Hiawatha was eastbound on U.S. 36 approaching Goldfinch Road. The vehicle left the roadway to the north and traveled eastbound “in the ditch striking a highway sign and then striking Goldfinch Rd.”
The vehicle vaulted and overturned multiple times. Childress was ejected out of the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
There were no passengers in the vehicle. The reported included that Childress was not wearing a seatbelt.
