Brisk November air couldn’t keep runners and walkers away from the 8th Annual Turkey Trot 5K and Mile Fun Run on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 23. Against a stunning autumn backdrop and the brisk air, participants of all ages braved the chilly temperatures to celebrate fitness, camaraderie, family, and community spirit.
This year’s Turkey Trot drew several participants who took on the challenge of the event. Whether running, walking, or jogging, each participant contributed to the festive atmosphere that marked the start of the holiday season. Adding to the fun, a special turkey greeted finishers at the end of the course, and everyone was treated to steaming cups of hot chocolate and a caramel apple bar—sweet rewards for their efforts and a perfect way to warm up after a cold morning.
The event wasn’t just about individual achievements; it was also a collaborative effort showcasing the best of community and family spirit. Hiawatha Parks & Recreation, under the leadership of Stacy Jasper, played a key role in organizing the event. The Hiawatha Lady Red Hawk basketball team volunteered their time to supervise the course, cheer on participants, and capture memorable moments. The team’s energy added to the day’s excitement, especially as they rallied around one of their own teammates participating in the event.

This year’s races brought out some fierce competitors and strong performances. In the Mile Fun Run, Nash Frank took first place with a strong finish, followed by Landrie Wilson in second and Brenden Chandler in third. The 5K race saw an impressive showing from Pauly and Alex Rockey, who crossed the finish line together to claim first and second place, with Bri Guilliams securing third.
The Turkey Trot’s signature twist—recognizing participants who came closest to their predicted finish times—added an extra layer of fun. Rory Wilson earned first place with an impressive prediction, finishing just 12 seconds off his estimated time. For his accuracy, he won the coveted turkey. Levi Manche claimed second place at just 13 seconds off his prediction, taking home a holiday ham. Alex Rockey rounded out the top three, finishing 58 seconds off his estimate and earning a prize of sweet treats—perfect for a post-race celebration.
Organizers expressed heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made the event a success, from the participants and volunteers to the community members who came out to support.
“It was a great day,” one of the organizers said, reflecting on the energy and enthusiasm that filled the morning. “Stacy always brings such great energy that it spills out to others around. You just end up having a fun time.”
HP&R is spreading holiday cheer with two festive events this season. From Nov. 25 through Dec. 15, children are invited to drop off their letters to Santa at the Fisher Center. A special Christmas mailbox is located by the front doors, ready to deliver holiday wishes straight to the North Pole. Don’t forget to include your letter in an envelope with a return address—Santa will reply promptly, thanks to his friends at HP&R!

Families are also encouraged to join the annual Candy Cane Hunt and Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 14, 2024, at the Fisher Center Gym. This free event is open to toddlers through 4th graders, with group start times scheduled throughout the morning: 9:00 a.m. for toddlers and preschoolers, 9:20 a.m. for kindergarten through first grade, 9:40 a.m. for second through fourth grade, and 10:00 a.m. for individuals with special needs.
