The Red Hawk Scholar’s Bowl Varsity Team took first place at the Royal Valley round-robin tournament on Thursday, Jan. 16.
The Hiawatha Lions were busy with activities last year. Last fall in 2024, the Lions contributed $500 to hurricane relief efforts.
The Brown County Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel met at the Carwell Building in Hiawatha for their bi-monthly luncheon meeting. The tables were decorated with bright bunches of the Kansas flower: the Sunflower in honor of our state’s upcoming 164th birthday Jan. 29.
New Brown County Commissioner of District 2 Lucas Heinen was sworn in by Judge Weingart before the start of Monday’s county meeting.
The two new commissioners--Tom Martin of Seat 2 and Laura Tollefson of Seat 4--were sworn in at the beginning of Monday’s city commission meeting. City Commissioner Brian Shefferd of Seat 3 was also sworn in and re-appointed via Zoom call.
The USD 415 Board of Education met on Monday evening to meet with a representative from investment bank and financial services company Piper Sandler about bond options and information for the Hiawatha school system and what financial information would look like in the school district’s near future.
After last week’s blizzard, all that was left were large heaps of snow that were covering the streets, sidewalks and other areas in Hiawatha.
