Two members of the Hiawatha High School Red Hawk track team earned first place in two events at the Big East League track meet at Silverlake on Thursday, May 15.

Fourth and fifth grade students from Hiawatha USD 415 and Horton USD 430 visited the Brown County Fairgrounds in Horton for a special Earth Day event that took place on Tuesday, May 6.

Art competitions have long served as a beacon for creative exploration and artistic excellence. Such art competitions play a pivotal role in student development, enhancing technical skills, nurturing creative confidence, and even shaping future career paths.

In Hiawatha, there is a lot of art around the town, whether they are art murals or musicians coming down to perform at the Hiawatha Creamery or town events. Many people are involved with music in our lives like music on the radio, as some listen to their favorite songs and start singing. Other arts that many students or individuals participate in are art or music classes.

It was a difficult struggle at home at the Noble Park baseball field for the Hiawatha Red Hawk baseball team as they were defeated by the Rossville Bulldogs on Thursday night on May 8. The Bulldogs beat the Red Hawks at a total score of 23-2.

Girard National Bank in Hiawatha was recognized as Hiawatha Chamber & Visitors Bureau’s Member of the Month on Tuesday morning.

The Hiawatha Lady Red Hawks were at home last Thursday night. They played a double header against the Holton Lady Wildcats. The Lady Red Hawks were hoping to turn the corner in the season with a victory. The Lady Wildcats came into the contest on a nice streak of winning three of their last four games. The Lady Red Hawks struggled to score runs against the Lady Wildcats. The Lady Wildcats pitching was exceptional. The ball seemed to be very alive and found the strike zone with regularity. The Lady Red Hawks could only muster six hits for the game. They also stranded three of those runners on base. The Lady Wildcats combined numerous base hits with minimal fielding errors to run away with the game. The final score was 2-13 in favor of the Lady Wildcats. A bright spot in the game was Michaela Williams who went 2-for-3, with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.

Freshman Brynnan Boye started pitching for the Lady Red Hawks in the first game. The game saw both teams very aggressive from the plate. The ball was flying all over the field. The Lady Red Hawks had runners on base and in scoring position on numerous occasions. They ended up leaving eight runs on base in the game. The Lady Red Hawks came up short in the end, by a final score of 2-5. Both teams battled hard on every pitch. The Lady Red Hawks had several opportunities to win. They made several mistakes that ended up costing them the game. There continues to be marked improvements for the Lady Red Hawks. They lost, but played very well. Head Coach Sherri Nelson commented, “We had some nice hits and left the runners stranded out there.”

Local veteran Roger Streib has been recently selected to be taken on a trip to Washington, D.C. by the Honor Flight Network in early April, a trip beginning on Sunday, April 27.
