Hawks crush the course at Holton Invite

There were promising signs at Hiawatha’s opening meet of the cross country season, but in week two, the results were far more than promising, as the girls took first and the boys took third on Thursday at Holton.For the middle school boys, Eastan Sheldon took fourth overall to lead the team, followed by Braylon Kuehn in 29th, Tristan Gibbs in 52nd, and Kellen Boye in 54th for the Red Hawks.

Bulldogs bully Hawks as Hiawatha shut out on the road

A back and forth battle that was decided late in week one for the Hiawatha Red Hawks gave way to a much different result this week, as the Hawks hit the road once again, this time running into a buzzsaw of a Marysville team and coming home with a 38-0 loss.A week after the Bulldogs upset defending State champion Nemaha Central, Marysville did not look dominant in the early going of Friday night’s game, as the Red Hawk defense played well in the first half, standing up the Dogs on fourth down to turn Marysville over on their first drive.

Red Hawks run at Silver Lake

The cross country season has officially begun, and the Hiawatha Red Hawks took to the course at Silver Lake on Saturday to compete in their first meet of the year. Hiawatha Middle School was led by Eastan Sheldon in fifth for the boys, with Braylon Kuehn in 23rd, Kellen Boye in 30th and Tristan Gibbs in 35th.

Hawks fall in Big East opener at Royal Valley

The Hiawatha Red Hawks and new head coach Wyatt Jiru did not get the momentum-building win they were hoping for on Friday night, as the team traveled to Royal Valley for a match up between two teams hoping to recover from disappointing 2023 seasons, and came a yard short of continuing a fourth quarter comeback attempt. The final result was an 18-13 Panther win, setting the Red Hawks off on an 0-1 start and hungry to pick up their first win the new Big East League in next Friday’s road tilt at Marysville.

Chiefs escape by inches in season opener against Baltimore

It wasn’t pretty, but the Kansas City Chiefs opened their season with a matchup against with last season’s top regular season team, the Baltimore Ravens, and were able to end the night the same way they started it--celebrating. On the night that the team toasted their Super Bowl win to cap the previous season with a brand new banner, the Chiefs had some moments of outstanding play and moments of fatigue and sloppiness, but ended the contest with a win when Ravens’ tight end Isaiah Likely seemingly caught a ball in the back of the end zone which was wiped out with a toe across the back line that sealed the 27-20 Kansas City victory.

Hiawatha High School Cross Country

This season marks a decade as the Red Hawk cross country coach for Becky Shamburg, as the State Championshipwinning and former Coach of the Year continues to guide the highly successful Hiawatha program. Shamburg will look to rebuild the men’s team, as longtime program stalwarts Jordan Hodge, Riley Gibbs and Felix McCartney have graduated from the Big 7 League Championship team from a year ago.

Lady Red Hawks suffer defeat by Holton

The Lady Red Hawks competed with the Holton Wildcats at Hiawatha High School on Tuesday evening. Despite their best efforts, the Red Hawks were unable to get the upper hand against the Wildcats, leading to a defeat with the final scores being 2515 and 25-16 on the first game set and 25-17 on the second game set, leaving Hiawatha at 0-1 at League and 0-2 overall.

New Red Hawk football head man Wyatt Jiru takes over a program that has struggled in recent seasons, both to win games and at times, to keep players healthy and on the field. This year, Coach Jiru is hoping to lean on some veteran players to establish the beginnings of a new culture at HHS.
