Lady Red Hawk cheerleading will have a new leader this season, as Emi Deters brings her prior experience from Troy High School to the sidelines at HHS. Deters says she has 16 girls cheering for football, and is currently set with 8 for the basketball season.
The Hiawatha High School Red Hawk football team faced off with Nemaha Central and Centralia at a football jamboree that took place at Nemaha Central High School. The Red Hawks will start their football season this Friday at Royal Valley High School as they compete with the Royal Valley Panthers.

The Lady Red Hawks competed with the Holton Wildcats at Hiawatha High School on Tuesday evening. Despite their best efforts, the Red Hawks were unable to get the upper hand against the Wildcats, leading to a defeat with the final scores being 2515 and 25-16 on the first game set and 25-17 on the second game set, leaving Hiawatha at 0-1 at League and 0-2 overall.
The Hiawatha High School Red Hawk football team hosted a scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 24. The team was split into two groups to run line offense and defense. The teams performed ball throwing, catching and massive tackling maneuvers to practice their football skills for the upcoming football season and to demonstrate these impressive skills to a small crowd that were present at the HHS practice field.
It’s still an adjustment, this three game preseason schedule, and it feels like it has flown by, as the Chiefs were outclassed in a depth-based exhibition on Thursday evening in a 34-21 loss to the Chicago Bears. Of course, the outcome means nothing, but there were still some valuable takeaways and things worth talking about.

The Hiawatha High School Class of 1984 Scholarship Fund awarded a total of $9,000 in nonrenewable $1,000 scholarships to nine graduates of the HHS Class of 2024. Every completed application received a scholarship this year.
