Millions of people call the he United States and Canada home, and a long border is shared between the two nations. There are many similarities between the U.S. and Canada, including the types of crimes that are most common each year.
Adolescence is marked by various changes, including teenagers’ desire to be more independent. Working may be a priority at this stage in life, as teens may find themselves with financial responsibilities, such as money needed for date nights or hobbies, or having to pay for gas and car insurance after getting their driver’s license. Some teens may need to contribute financially to their household to help make ends meet.
September’s character word of the month was Empathy. Grade level teachers chose one boy and one girl who showed the characteristics of Perseverance. Students received a certificate, $5 gift card to Sonic and a Red Hawk Character Kids t-shirt!
The Hiawatha Lady Red Hawks made their way to Sabetha on Thursday evening. The Sabetha Lady Bluejays hosted a Triangular that also included the Rossville Lady Bulldogs.

In the midst of everything else, we now have a Border Patrol scam circulating our county.
On Sept. 27, the annual Maple Leaf Festival took place in Hiawatha, KS. The festival was hosted downtown on the courthouse square. The event was planned and organized by the Hiawatha Chamber and Visitors Bureau. There were approximately 81 vendors including food trucks, activities, and shopping experiences. The festival normally takes place around the same time each year and is a way for the community to gather and celebrate the beginning of the fall season.
