
Doniphan West High School celebrates enchanting ‘Secret Garden’ prom

The Doniphan West Lady Mustangs are headed to the Class 2A state tournament after a hard-fought 39-35 victory over Wabaunsee in the sub-state championship played at Valley Heights on Saturday, March 8.
The DWHS Mustangs boys basketball season came to an end Thursday, Feb. 27 in the first round of sub-state, falling to Rossville 32-53. Despite a strong effort, the Mustangs couldn’t overcome the Bulldogs on their home court.
The Doniphan West High School girls wrestling team showcased their talent and determination at the KSHSAA Girls 3-1A East Super Regional, held at Rossville High School on February 14-15. The tournament featured tough competition, with Doniphan West’s wrestlers battling through the brackets in hopes of securing a spot at the state tournament.
The Wrestling cooperative that includes Hiawatha, Doniphan West and Troy traveled to Atchison recently. All of the wrestlers competed at a high level and overall, there were eight athletes that placed in the tournament. Six of the wrestlers were from Hiawatha.
In the week leading up to Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 20, Mrs. Taylor’s English 3 class immersed themselves in the powerful words and historical significance of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Students delved into the social context of the March on Washington in August 1963, examining the speech’s vivid imagery and masterful use of figurative language. The analysis offered students a deeper understanding of King’s rhetorical style and the enduring impact of his vision for equality and justice.
The Doniphan West junior high basketball teams traveled to Onaga on Jan. 16 for another exciting round of competition. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams demonstrated grit and determination, with several games going down to the wire.
