The Hiawatha Lady Red Hawks hosted its home opener to visiting teams from Jefferson West and Rossville on Tuesday evening.

A Nebraska man was arrested on US Highway 36 for littering and driving with a canceled license on the morning of Monday, Sept. 8.

Maple Leaf Festival ready to fall on Sept. 27
Hiawatha Chamber & Visitors Bureau will once again host the Maple Leaf Festival on Saturday, Sept 27. Just like the previous festival before, the event will take place in downtown Hiawatha around the Brown County Courthouse Square from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Choosing dialogue over division
Michael Keaton pointed out “Charlie Kirk [a Republican] was murdered to silence his speech, and three months earlier, former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman [a Democrat] and her husband Mark were murdered to silence their speech.” School shootings are escalating. On September 10th, a student in a Colorado school opened fire on other students. On August 27th, a 23 year-old fired through a window of Annunciation Catholic Church killing two students. Violence and hate speech in America have gotten out of hand.


Brown County Commissioner announces resignation, motion passed to submit budget to Loyd Group
Brown County Commissioner Richard Lehmkuhl announced that he would resign from the Brown County District 1 Commissioner position at the end of the meeting that took place on Tuesday, Sept. 2. The Brown County commission also passed submitting the 2026 budget to Galva-based Loyd Group for the finalization process during Monday morning’s meeting on Sept. 15.
