
HHS JV Scholars Bowl Places First at Sabetha

Brown County Sheriff deputy Richard Rockwell was one of the Sheriff’s Office personnel present at Monday’s county commission meeting as he spoke with the commissioners about his concerns about the rises in health insurance and losing Sheriff’s Office personnel.

USD 415 board member Brooklyn Schuetz is running for re-election. She is currently running unopposed.

The city commission approved two motions to fix curbs and gutters in different areas of Hiawatha, after being presented with the work needing to be done and the costs by Public Works Director Dominic Grier.

Two candidates will be running for USD 415 School Board’s Position 5 spot. These candidates include Orveda Anderson and Phil Roberts.


The Hiawatha Red Hawks welcomed the Perry-Lecompton Kaws to Memorial Stadium Friday Night. It was a cold, rainy evening, yet the stands were crowded. Fans were eager to cheer on the Red Hawks in their homecoming game. The Red Hawks came into the game after giving the always tough Holton Wildcats a nice test in last Friday’s loss. Unfortunately, this year’s homecoming did not include a football victory. The loss marked the fifth in the last six games for the Hiawatha Red Hawks. The final score was 7-41.

Come October 31, there is extra mischief in the air, and who knows what might be lurking around those dim corners? Halloween is a time when the line between having fun and being scared is easily blurred.

The Hiawatha High School Red Hawk volleyball team competed in Holton on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Class 3A Sub State Tournament. Given this was a single elimination tournament, the four teams attending were #1 Holton, #2 Jefferson West, #3 Maranatha Christian Academy and # Hiawatha. The first match of the tournament was Hiawatha vs. Holton.

Halloween is enjoyed by people of all ages, but few get a bigger kick out of the holiday than children. There are costumes to be worn, time spent with friends and the opportunity to collect free candy and other treats.
