Art competitions have long served as a beacon for creative exploration and artistic excellence. For students, these events are much more than opportunities to win prizes—they are formative experiences that contribute significantly to personal, academic, and professional growth. Such art competitions play a pivotal role in student development, enhancing technical skills, nurturing creative confidence, and even shaping future career paths.

Several Horton High School art students participated in the Northeastern Kansas Regional Art Invitational and Competition at Highland Community College in Highland Kansas on Thursday, April 17, 2025. Fourteen of the artworks submitted by Horton High School art students earned the school a First Place in competition against other 1A, 2A, and 3A Kansas schools. Over nine hundred artworks were submitted from 45 schools from across the state participated in this event this year. Art Day judges will view several hundred works of art and present Best of Show, Artistic Excellence, and Honorable Mention awards to selected works. The competition offers students the opportunity to publicly display their art and to view the work of their fellow students. The show is a wonderful source of inspiration and ideas for students and educators alike.

Members of the Horton Senior Citizens Center took a tour of the Werner Wagon Works on Tuesday, May 5. We enjoyed seeing some “works in progress” and hearing about all of the wagons that were built in Horton and shipped all over the U.S.A. Donnie and his wife Connie Werner have significant knowledge from building or refurbishing antique wagons. Many thanks to them both for taking the time to show us their business and answering all our questions.

The Horton Senior Citizens are happy to have new chairs and blinds! They arrived last week. Many thanks to Larry Paulsen, Phil Wiley and Dean Mercer for getting the blinds installed and also to Janice Langdon for helping to get the chairs unwrapped and set up in the center. We would not have been able to make these improvements without the generous donations from our friends.

“The Money in Uncle George’s Suitcase” by Pat Cook will be premiering at Horton High School this spring.
