Brown County commission speaks with Loyd Group about 2026 budget
The Brown County commission met with Scot Loyd of Galva-based Loyd Group, LLC. via Zoom call to discuss the 2026 budget during Monday morning’s meeting. Members of the Hiawatha Foundation for Economic Development were also present during the meeting.

New equipment was purchased for the Ag Mechanics and welding shop at Hiawatha High School with the Steve Lock Memorial Scholarship.

Doniphan West Volleyball Battles Through Season Openers
The Doniphan West Mustang volleyball teams opened their season at home on September 2 in Highland, hosting Frankfort and Centralia. The Varsity squad earned a strong win over Frankfort, taking the match in straight sets 25-15 and 25-8. Against Centralia, however, the Mustangs fell in two hard-fought sets, 21-25 and 18-25.

Friends of Hospice meet on Aug. 27
The monthly meeting of the NEK Friends of Hospice volunteers was held on Wednesday, August 27 at the Horton Library. Those in attendance were President Rosemary Schooler, Secretary Betty Robison, Charlene Branch, Donna Bottom, Nancy Burns, Dixie Westervelt, Social Worker Kendra Cowley, and Volunteer Coordinator Michelle Bottom.
